A small file. A whole new world.
Games on Cart Otter are digital ROM files for compatible hardware or emulators. A download does not include a physical cartridge.
Chromatic: DevDay Edition quickstart
Making your first game? ModRetro’s guide covers firmware updates, developer-mode activation, its Codex plugin, playtesting, and putting your own game on a cartridge.

1. Pick up a game
Every game in the collection is free. Open a listing and choose “Play in browser” to try it immediately, without signing in. To keep a copy, add the game to your library and download the .gb or .gbc file from your library. Keep a backup.
2. Choose how to play
Right here in your browser: click the game screen to use the arrow keys, X or Space for A, Z for B, Enter for Start, and M for Select. Touch controls work on phones and tablets. Use the player’s buttons to pause, restart, enable sound, or go fullscreen. Preview progress resets when you leave or restart; it is not saved to your account. Some games may work better on compatible hardware.
On a ModRetro Chromatic: you need a supported programmable cartridge and an appropriate flashing workflow. For the DevDay Edition, ModRetro’s guide describes activating developer mode and flashing your original ROM to the included cartridge. A USB cable alone does not turn every Chromatic cartridge into a writable one.
On Game Boy or Game Boy Color: use compatible flash-cartridge hardware and its manufacturer’s instructions. Color-only games require color-capable hardware.
In an emulator: open the downloaded ROM in a Game Boy or Game Boy Color emulator that supports the game’s format. Use your own legally obtained games and comply with any emulator requirements.
3. Check the game’s notes
Creators provide controls, version information, credits, and known issues on the listing. A “tested by creator” label means the creator reports testing on a Chromatic; it is not a certification by Cart Otter or ModRetro.
Making your own game?
Build an original .gb or .gbc ROM, test it, and prepare cover artwork you have the right to use. Then publish it here with your signed creator declaration.
